Academic Progress

To be on track for graduation and eligible for participation in opportunities available to full-time students at CMU, students must achieve satisfactory academic progress which includes the following:

  1. Pass at least 67% of the coursework attempted

  2. Earn at least a 1.0 GPA each semester

  3. Maintain a minimum GPA according to the chart below

*Hours attempted that do not include developmental or P/F courses.

Failure to reach academic progress results in:

Academic Warning

An academic warning is delivered after the first instance of failure to achieve measures of satisfactory academic progress.

  • Students will meet with their academic advisor to discuss a plan for achieving satisfactory academic progress.

Academic Probation

Academic probation is imposed after the second instance of failure to achieve measures of satisfactory academic progress. Academic probation indicates that the student is at risk of not being on track for graduation and may lose eligibility to participate in opportunities available to full time students at CMU.

  • Students will receive a notice of academic probation and it will be noted on their transcript.

  • Students on academic probation will be advised to meet with their academic advisor to discuss a plan for achieving satisfactory academic progress.

  • Students may be required to take certain courses to help them achieve satisfactory academic progress.

  • Students are removed from academic probation once they achieve the measures of satisfactory academic progress.

Academic Suspension

If students do not meet measures of satisfactory academic progress after two consecutive semesters on academic probation, they will receive a notice of academic suspension and it will be noted on their transcript.

  • Students will be informed that repeated instances of failure to achieve measures of satisfactory academic progress have reduced the likelihood of successful graduation.

  • Students who have been suspended are not eligible to enroll in classes at CMU until one of the following options is completed.

Post-Suspension Options:

  1. Petition for readmission on full-time/part-time, probationary status: A suspended student who wishes to return full-time/part-time to CMU classes (at any campus/site or online) must petition the faculty Committee on Academic Standards and Admissions (care of the Office of the Provost) to enroll as a full-time/part-time student at CMU (at any CMU campus/site or online or summer or regular CGES term). If that petition is successful, the student will be readmitted on academic probation. If a student enrolls in a January or May term class before the student is informed that the student has been suspended, he or she may finish out only that term's classes. The student may not enroll in any Summer or other regular term class without a successful petition of the Committee. The decision of the Committee on Academic Standards is final and binding on all parties.

  2. Enroll at another accredited institution during suspension period: A suspended student who chooses to enroll at another accredited institution during the period of suspension and who then petitions for readmission at CMU must submit official transcripts from that other institution for review by the Committee on Academic Standards and Admissions before the student is readmitted. The student may not enroll in any CMU courses (at any CMU campus/site or online or summer or regular CGES) unless and until that student has successfully petitioned the Committee.
