Grade Appeal
Students have the right to appeal a final course grade within one calendar year of the final grade being posted on their official transcript. The process for appealing a final course grade is:
1. The student must make a good-faith effort to resolve the concern directly with the course instructor as most questions or misunderstandings can be clarified and resolved at that level.
2. If the concern is not resolved with the instructor, the student may appeal to the Division Chair or Program Director. During this step, the instructor will be consulted. The final grade cannot be changed at this stage without the instructor’s agreement.
3. If the issue remains unresolved, the student may continue the appeal by contacting the Office of the Provost, which will provide guidance on submitting a written petition to the Academic Standards and Admissions Committee, who will schedule a meeting to review the appeal. The student and instructor will both submit written statements and supporting documentation. The committee meeting will be closed door.
In their request for the review of a final course grade, students should clearly explain the basis for their appeal and provide supporting documentation. During the review process, the committee may request written clarification or additional information from the student, instructor, or relevant academic offices to make a fair and informed decision.
If at least two-thirds of the Academic Standards and Admissions Committee determine that a grade change is warranted, the committee will instruct the Registrar to make the change. The committee’s decision is final and binding on all parties. The Office of the Provost will notify all parties of the decision. The decision of the committee is final.
